Case Study : Wayport

When Wayport needed to scale manufacturing quickly and cost-effectively, Bantam delivered a custom manufacturing solution that addressed the increased production levels while maintaining quality, as well as decreased cost and time-to-customer.

Challenge:

Wayport, (www.wayport.com) the world's largest provider of high-speed Wi-Fi wireless and wired Internet access in hotels, airports, McDonald's and other retail venues, etc., was expanding rapidly to capture market share and stay ahead of increasing competition. The dramatic growth quickly exceeded Wayport's internal manufacturing capacity.

To meet demand and position itself for long-term success, Wayport needed more network management devices (NMDs) manufactured in shorter time frames while maintaining or exceeding its current quality performance standards. But there was a catch. Wayport's patented product required the NMDs to have a custom configuration to meet the needs of their customers, which had historically created manufacturing challenges and increased production time and cost.

Solution:

Bantam developed a scalable, custom manufacturing solution that allowed Wayport's NMDs to be built 'to spec'-utilizing a mixture of standard and custom-fit components to exactly match its unique configuration requirements. Once manufactured, the NMDs were held in a Just-In-Time inventory solution at Bantam, where Wayport could pull from stock and take same-day delivery.

Outcome:

Working with Bantam, Wayport was able to install more than 5000 locations in 2004. The Bantam solution also helped Wayport lower their overall manufacturing costs. As a result, Wayport was able to scale operations to match its sales curve and become the leading player in the high-speed Wi-Fi and wired Internet access market.

Quick Update:

Wayport continues to grow operations and scale custom manufacturing to meet demand--Bantam now manufactures more than 25 times the original program level. Bantam has also helped Wayport improve quality--maintaining a less than one percent failure rate on Bantam-manufactured NMDs.
